Spital Cemetery is 160 Years Old

Friends of Spital Cemetery welcome you to share our 160th birthday in this beautiful Victorian Garden Cemetery.

At St Leonard’s Mission Room, Valley Road, S41 0HQ

11.00 am opening ceremony performed by Toby Perkins
Chesterfield MP

11.05 – 11.20 Qdos Community Choir performance

11.20 am – 5pm stalls advertising the work of local conservation, garden and history groups. Refreshments.

7:00 pm (doors open at 6.30) – 9pm Talk

Transformations: Landscape Garden to Garden Cemetery,

In the cemetery we will be piloting new information boards.

1:00 pm Walk: General Tour of the Cemetery

3:00 pm Walk: Magnificent Cemetery Trees .

Professor Stevens Curl has established an international reputation for scholarship and thorough investigation in little known fields of which ‘The Garden Cemetery Movement’ is one. Expect to be entertained and informed.

PARKING. Please note that there is no parking for Cemetery Day visitors in the cemetery grounds. There is free street parking in the immediate vicinity. Both the rail station and the centre of Chesterfield are only 10-15 minutes walk away. Regular bus services to Chesterfield Royal Hospital and Clay Cross pass the cemetery gates. (80,80A,48,82,83)

Chesterfield & District Family History Society Annual Fair

The Chesterfield and District Family History Society Annual Fair will be held on Saturday 3rd June 2017 at the PROACT Football Stadium on Sheffield Road , Chesterfield .

The Civic Society has a stall at the event and other exhibitors cover Genealogy , Local History and Crafts .

Admission is £1 , including entry to the raffle , while children are free . Full details , with a full list of exhibitors , can be found here  :

CADFHS Annual Fair 2017

Chesterfield Area Walking Festival 2017

The Chesterfield Area Walking Festival will take place between the 6th and 14th May this year , and includes many walks exploring the history and heritage of Chesterfield . Full details can be found on the link below :

Chesterfield Walking Festival 2017

Two walks may be of particular interest .  One led by Janet Murphy is a tour of the Black and White Buildings of Chesterfield ; the other , organised by the Friends of Spital Cemetery will include the cemetery itself .
