DRONFIELD CIVIC SOCIETY

Founded in 1989 following concerns about the state of the town raised by members of Dronfield Rotary Club, the society aims to look after historic buildings by recognising the importance of conservation, improve the local street scene for residents and visitors, and provide opportunities for local people to get involved in shaping where they live.

MATLOCK CIVIC ASSOCIATION

Dedicated to improving Matlock. The association has published a series of walks of the area and undertaken practical projects such as restoration of the Second World War Air Defence site on Asker Lane and a mural on Derwent bridge (at Derwent Way).

LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL, HERITAGE AND HISTORY SOCIETIES
BARROW HILL ENGINE SHED SOCIETY

Barrow Hill Roundhouse, built in 1870, is the last surviving railway roundhouse in the United Kingdom with an operational turntable. Threatened with demolition in 1991, when closed by British Rail, this volunteer society has been responsible for saving it. It is now a unique railway museum and events venue.

A community development charity looking to provide facilities and services for the people of Barrow Hill. Their major project is restoration of the closed Barrow Hill Memorial Club.

Has a particular interest in the history of the Brimington and Tapton area. Publishes a yearly journal.

The society has a monthly meeting programme, publishes a regular newsletter and an occasional journal. It has also published a Chesterfield town centre trail.

CHESTERFIELD CYCLE CAMPAIGN

Chesterfield Cycle Campaign promotes cycle use in Chesterfield for both leisure and utility journeys.  By campaigning for a comprehensive network, we aim to improve conditions for cyclists so that cycling becomes a safer and more attractive option than car travel for local journeys.

DON CATCHMENT RIVERS TRUST

Don Catchment Rivers Trust has been established to help protect and restore the rivers in the River Don catchment area, this includes not just the River Don but also the River Dearne, River Rother and other rivers such as the Sheaf, Went, Ea Beck and many others.

HERITAGE OPENDAYS (NATIONAL SITE)

England’s history, architecture and culture is celebrated when buildings of every age, style and function open their doors for free for the annual Heritage Open Days. Chesterfield and District Civic Society have taken the lead in coordinating a series of local events.

NORTH EAST DERBYSHIRE INDUSTRIAL ARCHAEOLOGY SOCIETY

Focusses on the rich industrial history and archaeology of the broader Chesterfield and north-east  Derbyshire area. Has monthly meetings with talks on local heritage. Members receive quarterly newsletters full of details about ‘What’s On’. Visit are arranged to local and not-so-local sites of interest, and we carry out surveys and limited excavation within the area.

Transition Chesterfield was started in 2008 as part of the transition movement and since that time has involved hundreds of people in practical projects and activities to raise awareness of climate change and help to make Chesterfield more resilient, sustainable, low-carbon and locally self-sufficient.

This fund aims to support communities and organisations along the routes that EMR serve and is designed to inspire projects that make a difference to those that need it the most. The fund is grant aiding two of the society’s blue plaques in 2023.
