TOWN TRAILS

Chesterfield and District Local History Society’s (CADLHS) webpage has many resources available on the history of the town.

You can also download below two trails available, both written by civic society committee member Janet Murphy. Explore Chesterfield was published by CADLHS.

OUR BLUE PLAQUES

Access information on the history of our blue plaque buildings via the interactive map.

VISITOR MAP

Map of Chesterfield with visitor information. (Please note that since this map was published the visitor information centre shown on it has closed). Since the end of April 2024 there is regrettably no physical visitor information centre in Chesterfield.

PROPERTY HISTORY – THORNFIELD

A Brief History of Thornfield was prepared by the society in 2017 to assist
Chesterfield Borough Council in determining a planning application at Thornfield House, Stonegravels. At one stage the house was to be demolished but a rethink saved the property. The note incorporates a history of the house.

PROPERTY HISTORY – THE VICTORIA CENTRE

We’re grateful to Janet Murphy for permission to reproduce her distory of the Victoria Centre. This important ‘black and white’ building on Knifesmithgate, Chesterfield is currently empty. It’s also on our … buildings at risk list.

PROPERTY HISTORY – THE SHUBBERIES

A history of the Shrubberies looks at this now demolished villa property on Newbold Road, Chesterfield. It was built sometime between 1852 and 1857. This historical note was prepared as part of our unsuccessful objections to the property being demolished.

PROPERTY HISTORY – FORMER ST HELENA GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL

These notes on the former St Helena Girls’ High School, Sheffield Road (now the University of Derby’s Sheffield Campus) and GH Widdows highlight this Grade II listed building. It was and indeed still is an important centre of education in Chesterfield. It was also designed by county architect GH Widdows, whose important career we briefly cover in this note.
