Welcome

Welcome to Chesterfield and District Civic Society’s website. Please use the links to the top right to explore the many resources on this site, or find out about our latest news here.

The Society covers the area of Chesterfield Borough and the adjacent districts of Barlow, Brampton, Walton, Wingerworth, Hasland (including Winsick and Grassmoor) and Calow.

The Civic Society came in to existence over 50 years ago. It was created by members of the then Chamber of Trade in response to proposals to demolish the Market Hall of 1857 and ‘comprehensively redevelop’ Chesterfield town centre.  The market place would have been covered by a shopping centre, and the character of the town changed irrevocably. Thanks to the Society, working with others, this never happened, and the character of the town was preserved and rejuvenated.

In a similar way, the Eyre Chapel at Newbold was saved from dereliction, and is now a popular venue for public meetings and events .

The Society will continue to persuade, cajole, and when necessary confront our local councils,  to make the area a better place to live, work and enjoy life .
